  • The article discusses the discovery of HIV-1 genome traces suggesting that HIV first surfaced in 1908. The traces, which were taken in 1960 from the lymph nodes of a woman who lived in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, allowed scientists to push back the date of HIV's first appearance by a decade.
