The article reports on research into the production of affordable consumer lighting from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The discovery by researchers at Purdue University that blue LEDs can be created on silicon with a self-contained reflective layer is described. The lower cost of creating LEDs in this method is described, noting the advantage over a more expensive method which requires gallium nitride and the addition of a separate reflector.
