El papel del arquitecto es un tema recurrente de debate debido a que su formación se sitúa a medio camino entre las disciplinas estrictamente técnicas, basadas en la investigación científica, y las disciplinas humanísticas, asociadas al arte y la cultura. Frente a la idea de acotar los campos de conocimiento para poder profundizar en cada uno de ellos, el arquitecto mantiene, en su formación, un campo de conocimiento abierto que le permita desarrollar tanto sus razonamientos como su intuición. Una situación incómoda y difícil en una sociedad que tiende a la segregación y especialización del trabajo.
El presente artículo defiende esta formación abierta y valora las distintas aproximaciones a la arquitectura, centrándose en un aspecto específico: el papel que la disciplina urbanística, desde el análisis y compresión de la ciudad y sus territorios, tiene en la formación del arquitecto.
Creemos que el urbanismo es una disciplina decisiva en la formación del arquitecto contemporáneo. Nos apoyaremos en algunas reflexiones de diferentes arquitectos modernos y contemporáneos que reivindican la construcción del espacio urbano como objetivo último de la arquitectura dentro de la ciudad. Si la arquitectura debe responsabilizarse del espacio del habitar, la ciudad constituye el espacio de confluencia donde ese habitar se hace social.
Arquitectura y ciudad quedan vinculadas al ser la primera el material básico para la construcción de la segunda y la ciudad el espacio social en el que se enmarca toda arquitectura.

The role of the architect is a recurring theme of debate because his training is halfway situated between strictly technical disciplines, based on scientific research, and humanistic disciplines, associated with art and culture. Faced with the idea of limiting the fields of knowledge to be able to delve into each one of them, the architect maintains in his education an open field of knowledge that allows him to develop both his reasoning and his intuition. An uncomfortable and difficult situation in a society that tends to segregate and specialize of work.
The present article defends this open formation and values the different approaches to architecture, focusing on a specific aspect: the role that urban discipline, from the analysis and understanding of the city and its territories, has in the architect’s education.
We believe that urbanism is a decisive discipline in the education of the contemporary architect. We shall base on some reflections of different modern and contemporary architects who claim the construction of urban space as the ultimate goal of architecture within the city. If architecture should be responsible for the inhabiting space, the city constitutes the confluent space where that inhabiting becomes social.
Architecture and the city remain linked as the first one is the basic material for the construction of the second one, which is the social space in where all architecture is framed.
