El concepte de jerarquia de les veritats ha estat introduït en els documents del magisteri de l’Esglésiaen el decret sobre l’ecumenisme del Concili Vaticà II, en indicar com s’ha viure el diàleg ecumènic. Estracta d’una expressió que ha tingut més «èxit» en el temps del postconcili del que segurament imaginavenels pares conciliars, perquè inclou una tensió entre la importància objectiva d’una veritat il’obligació de creure tots els dogmes. D’altra banda, l’ús d’aquesta expressió ha passat de l’ecumenismea l’hermenèutica teològica. S’ha presentat també com un criteri que ha inspirat la redacció delCatecisme de l’Església Catòlica i, darrerament el papa Francesc l’ha presentada en la seva ExhortacióLa joia de l’Evangeli com un criteri per a l’acció evangelitzadora de l’Església en el momentactual, deduint-ne les conseqüències pastorals.

The concept of the hierarchy of truths was introduced into the documents of the magisterium of the Church in the Vatican II decree on ecumenism, in indicating how ecumenical dialogue can be put into practice. Its success in the post-Council years has no doubt been greater than anything the conciliar fathers could have imagined, because it comprises a tension between the objective importance of a truth and the necessity for believing all the dogmas. Furthermore, it is a concept that has crossed from the domain of ecumenism to that of hermeneutic theology. It has also emerged as a criterion for the evangelistic action of the Church in the present day, with the pastoral consequences that devolve from it.
