Tomando como ejemplo la provincia bética franciscana y su dedicación al ministerio de la palabra en tiempos de Mateo Alemán (1547-1614), periodo durante el cual se afianzó la presencia seráfica en el Nuevo Mundo, en este artículo mostraremos en qué medida la expansión ultramarina de la orden marcó la labor de los predicadores en el seno de la provincia bética y sus relaciones con la aristocracia local. Aquellos que se evadieron del desafío indiano hallaron en el púlpito un medio para reorientar su carrera eclesiástica desde la metrópoli.

Using the Franciscan Bethica province and its dedication to the ministry of the word in times of Mateo Alemán (1547-1614) as an example, in this article we will show to what extent the overseas expansion of this order affected the work of the preachers in the bosom of the Bethica province. Furthermore, we will consider the relations of the friars with the local aristocracy during this period, in which the presence of the seraphical Franciscan order became established in the New World. Those who evaded the Indian challenge found in the pulpit a means to redirect their ecclesiastical career from the metropolis.
