The Karolinksa Institute has found pioneering trachea surgeon Paolo Macchiarini not guilty of scientific misconduct. In May, an independent investigator had reported evidence of misconduct in seven of Macchriarini's papers, but Karolinska Vice-Chancellor Anders Hamsten, who had the final say, rejected that conclusion after Macchiarini and others submitted more than a thousand pages of additional documentation. The institute will ask Macchiarini to submit errata on several of the papers in question, however. Macchiarini had given three patients at Karolinska an artificial trachea seeded with the patients' own stem cells. In April, an ethics council cleared Macchiarini of misconduct charges in a separate investigation.
