The article discusses different metaphors which have been used to describe the operation of the human brain, focusing on the 21st century description of the brain as a multipurpose pocketknife, known as the modularity model. The study of brain region activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is described. Some researchers raise objections to fMRI studies which suggest particular parts of the brain are only used for particular functions.
