  • The article reports that new genetic information suggests Christopher Columbus brought syphilis to Europe. Researchers at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia analyzed variants of the germ from around the world and discovered the closest relation to syphilis was yaws, a skin disease in South America . The first syphilis outbreak in Europe was in 1495.
