The article reports that Johns Hopkins University professor Susan P. Baker studied aviation safety in the U.S., finding that between 1983 to 2002 mishaps from pilot error dropped. The study examined 558 total mishaps, discovering gains from improved technology and training. The overall mishap rate, however, stayed the same, perhaps because of increased demands on ground crews and air traffic controllers.
