  • A five-year study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found switchgrass a more efficient source of ethanol than corn. Depending on annual rainfall levels, switchgrass can provide 540 percent more energy than used in its cultivation. Corn, the article reports, produces only 25 percent more energy than used in its production.
