Resumen de Mosquitoes Enlisted to Beat Malaria.

Mark Fischetti

  • The article discusses efforts to combat malaria with genetic engineering. The disease is spread from person to person by female Anopheles mosquitoes. Research teams have inserted genes into lab-bred mosquitoes that made them resistant to the malaria parasites, but the altered mosquito strains did not survive well in the wild. Experiments in which genetically engineered insects outpropagated natural ones are cited as providing fresh hope for the success of this approach.
