  • This article presents the winner of the magazines' Business Leader of the Year which was awarded to Amyris Biotechnologies of California for its work in synthetic biology. The company sought to find a better alternative fuel than ethanol and examined organic compounds to find a replacement. Custom-designed microbes are being used to test out alternative fuels that can be produced in a laboratory.
