This article examines effort to improve pulse jet engines that rely on repeated shock wave-driving combustion cycles to produce thrust efficiently. The pulse jets are simple engines once used by the Nazis in World War II to power their buzz bombs dropped in England and Europe. A description of how the engine works is supplied. Work is being conducted to adapt this technology for supersonic aircraft, air-breathing missiles, boosters for space vehicles and fighter plane afterburners. INSET: Shocking Spin-off.
