This article reports on research that suggests fear of punishment is the reason that most people can live together in relative peace. 23 male students were chosen and given money which they could split with one other participant. In some cases the receiver had to accept the donation and in others he could punish the giver by taking all of his money. Brain scans of the participants showed two active areas of the brain when the giver was punished, one of which was the impulse control center.
