The practice of law, understood as the defense one person undertakes before judges and courts with regard to another or to their patrimonial interests, was known and regulated by legal systems considered advanced in Antiquity, even if in none of these did this activity reach the degree of development, maturity and perfection it achieved in Rome, to the point of becoming a profession.
