Resumen de La lucha de la civilización contra el salvajismo en el arte de la frontera norte novohispana: imaginarios y representaciones sociales

  En el presente trabajo analizaré algunas imágenes poco estudiadas1 de los programas iconográficos conventuales de Actopan e Ixmiquilpan en los contextos de frontera, evangelización y guerra.

  Discutiré la representación del discurso de la lucha de la civilización contra el salvajismo en el contexto de la expansión novohispana en tierras chichimecas;

  para ello también utilizaré imágenes de la cartografía del siglo xvi, así como de algunos conventos del centro de México, con el objetivo de explicar la configuración de un imaginario propio de la frontera Recibido: 31 de enero del 2016 Aprobado: 12 de mayo del 2016 norte, en donde la disputa por el dominio de las tierras habitadas por chichimecas propició la generación de un conjunto de imágenes que muestran el conflicto a través de la metáfora de la lucha de Cristo y la comunidad cristiana contra el demonio, la idolatría y el salvajismo. Mostraré cómo, en estas imágenes, está presente el afán justificador de la expansión novohispana como empresa civilizadora en detrimento de los chichimecas, quienes fueron vilipendiados al representarlos como “bárbaros” y “salvajes”.

  In the following paper I will analyze some of the images not studied enough from the conventual iconographic program of Actopan and Ixmiquilpan in the context of the border, evangelization and war.

  I will discuss the representation of the discourse of the struggle of civilization against savagery in the context of the novohispanic expansion in chichamecas’ land; for this I will also use images of xvi century cartography, as well as convents from the center of Mexico, with the objective of explaining the conformation of a self-imagery of the northern border, where the dispute for the domain of the lands inhabited by chichamecas provided the construction of a set of images that show conflict through the metaphor of the struggle of Christ and the Christian community against evil, idolatry and savagery. I will show how in these images the justifying eagerness of the novohispanic expansion as an civilizing enterprise is present within detriment of the chichamecas who were vilified when represented as “barbaric” and/or “savage”
