  • Resumen
    • Federico Zuccari and the Grimani Breviary.

Having arrieved in Venice in 1563, Federico Zuccari immediately turned with curiosity and admiration to the works present in the city, including those in the "palazzo" of his patron, the patriarch of Aquileia Giovanni Grimani. His prestigious collection included the so-called "Grimani Breviary", a celebrated piece bought by Cardinal Domenico, Giovanni's uncle, and embellished with precious miniatures by Fleming masters in the second decade of the sixteenth century. Its plates were carefully studied by the painter, who made numerous copies of them in black and red stone in his travel diaries. These copies allowed Federico not only to preserve his memory of them, but also to draw inspiration from this for his painted works, dating from the years immediately after his departure from Venice (1565) and several decades later. The drawings inspired by the "Breviary" are a "unicum" in the artist's graphic production (indeed, it is not possible to identify such a high number of copies of a single object in it) and, contextually, the first sign of interest in northern painting, which grew over the subsequent years.
