The understanding of the definition of possession by Aelius Gallus (ap. Fest., p. 260-262 L.) depends on the reconstruction of the text preserved in the Codex Farnesianus (Napoli, Biblioteca Nazionale, Neap. IV A 3). A new analysis of the manuscript tradition in a wider perspective allows to verify whether and to which extent the hermeneutic circle conditioned the printed editions on which are based the different interpretations of this definition.
