The title of this article, as quoted form Favorinus by Aulus Gellius, states that "extravagant living is truly hateful". It then continues by discussing, inter alia, the meaning of luxury and Roman culture sumptuary laws; the differences between personal and public luxury; and the advantages and the disadvantages of wealth and luxury. The article's titule is then examined against the background of the discussion. Since the Roman public benefited enormously form money spent by public instances as well as private individuals and be concluded that although "extravagant living" was initially considered to be hateful by a specific section of the populace, it was eventually no longer the case since so many people benefited from the wealth.
