  Mientras que el pensamiento posmoderno se ha empeñado en deslegitimar la noción de la "verdad" apuntando a la naturaleza de construcción arbitraria, propia de cualquier concepto de la cultura, hoy se observa claramente una acusada tendencia de opción por lo "veraz", manifiesta en el auge de la literatura factual, representada por géneros como reportaje, biografía o novela histórica. Al mismo tiempo, proliferan textos que parecen beber, de cierto modo, de ambas tendencias a la vez. Son textos confusos y difíciles de clasificar, que juegan con el concepto de la "verdad" a la manera posmoderna, al mismo tiempo haciendo su eje estructural de la búsqueda de la "verdad perdida". Son representaciones de una obsesión por recuperar la certeza en un mundo perplejo. Se trata, sin embargo, de una obsesión consciente de su condena al fracaso. A través de este tipo de relatos híbridos, ejemplificados en las novelas de Tomás Eloy Martínez y Javier Cercas, se propone una visión de la "verdad ausente", por una parte estructuralmente comparable con la noción de "Lo Real" lacaniano y, por otra, basada en la figura del círculo hermenéutico

  Whereas the postmodern thought insisted on delegitimizing the notion of "truth" by conceiving every cultural concept as an arbitrary construction, today we are witnessing a clear tendency to pursue "the truthful", manifested in the rise of the factual literature, represented in such genres as reportage, biography or historic novel. Simultaneously we can see proliferating texts that seem to appeal to both tendencies at once. These are confusing and hardly classifiable texts that play with the concept of "truth" in quite a postmodern way at the same time that they establish as their structural axis the search for the "lost truth". These are representations of an obsession of recovering the certainty in an uncertain world, but, what is important, we have to do here with a self-aware obsession, that acknowledges its own unavoidable fail. This kind of hybrid narrations, exemplified in the novels of Tomás Eloy Martínez and Javier Cercas, entails a proposition of a vision of the "absent truth", on the one hand structurally comparable with the lacanian notion of "the Real" and, on the other hand, based on the figure of the hermeneutic circle
