The use of observations from passive satellite instruments in numerical weather prediction is being progressively complemented by the use of active instruments. This provides a better description of hydrometeors, aerosols and winds due to improved atmospheric penetration. In addition, the GPS radio-occultation technique offers new perspectives for observing temperature and water vapour from space.
