Resumen de Justice and non-violent jihad: The anti-colonial struggle in the North West frontier of British India

My paper considers one of the protest movements in the North West Frontier Province of British India, located near the sensitive zone separating the British and Russian Empires submitting therefore its population to punitive laws and measures. In the 1930s, the Pathans organised themselves into the Khudai Khidmatgar movement which rose against the severe curtailment of liberties. Until the nineteenth century, under other non-European regimes, the dispensation of justice had remained an intra-Pukhtun affair. Later on, however, the colonial administration modified traditional methods. I here look at the processes through which this battle for justice was fought.

Justice et jihad non violente : la lutte anti-coloniale à la frontière nord-ouest de l'lnde britannique. -- Cet article traite d'un des mouvements de protestation qui ont vu le jour dans la Province de la frontière du Nord-Ouest de l'Inde britannique, près de la zone sensible séparant les empires britannique et russe, soumettant ainsi sa population à de dures lois et mesures punitives. Dans les années trente, les Pathans formèrent le mouvement Khudai Khidmatgar qui s'éleva contre la sévère restriction des libertés. Jusqu'au XIXe siècle, sous d'autres régimes non européens, l'exercice de la justice était resté une affaire pashtoune. Par la suite, l'administration coloniale modifia les procédures traditionnelles. J'examine ici comment cette lutte pour la justice fut menée.
