  • The treatment of infectious processes in hospitals often requires the use of various antibiotics for extended periods of time. The safety profile of different antibiotics is very variable-sometimes this implies that withdrawal of the drug could be necessary due to the severity of adverse reactions. The present paper describes the case of a patient receiving treatment with ertapenem who presented altered mental status with confusion, disorientation and disturbances in the sleep-wake cycle during the first week of treatment. According to the computed tomography (CT) scan performed, the psychiatric assessment and the literature, the adverse drug reaction (ADR) was attributed to ertapenem. Antipsychotic treatment and subsequent suspension of the antibiotic therapy was performed, showing rapid clinical symptomatic improvement and recovery of normal consciousness
