    Horse racing in France: A wager and show with a diverse geography. – Despite attractive sales figures, horse racing in France is in the throes of a crisis: the volume of bets has stagnated, and trackside attendance has fallen off. To halt this trend, the PMU (the state-run bookmaking monopoly) and other racing companies have shifted advertisements from presenting racing as something ordinary to emphasizing this sport’s characteristics as a show. The sociological fractures running through the racing world (in particular, the one between galop with its aristocratic origins and trot with its rural origins), historical differences (which have given rise to the rules for different sorts of races), regional contrasts (between tracks located in western France and bettors living in urban working class areas), etc., all this casts doubt on the pertinence of any approach that takes horse racing to be a single, uniform activity. Far from denying or minimizing this diversity, and far from considering it to be a mere historical heritage, the attempt is made to understand the coherence and organization underlying it.

    En dépit d’un chiffre d’affaires élevé, les courses de chevaux en France traversent une crise (stagnation du volume des enjeux, baisse de la fréquentation des hippodromes). Pour tenter d’enrayer cette évolution, les campagnes de communication du PMU et des sociétés de courses, après avoir misé sur une banalisation des courses, s’efforcent aujourd’hui de valoriser leurs spécificités hippiques et spectaculaires. Les fractures sociologiques qui morcellent le monde hippique (notamment entre galop et trot), les différences historiques qui ont marqué l’apparition et la formalisation des types de courses, les contrastes régionaux, etc., autorisent à douter de la pertinence de toute approche des courses de chevaux comme d’un objet unique et uniforme. Loin de nier ou de minimiser cette diversité, loin aussi de la considérer comme un simple héritage historique, on cherche ici à saisir son agencement et sa cohérence.
