La mémoire collective et les identités palestiniennes se (re)produisent à partir des référents symboliques centraux que sont la terre villageoise, le territoire, la nation et le transnational. Avec la perspective de la création d’un État palestinien, l’instrumentalisation, populaire et officielle, de ces notions rend particulièrement saillant le processus de réinterprétation qui est à l’œuvre. Si ces concepts restent fondamentaux pour la majorité des Palestiniens, notamment en regard du conflit qui les oppose à Israël, leur signification et surtout leur articulation se modifient en fonction des nouvelles lignes de démarcation qui structurent la société autour de divergences de plus en plus marquées.

The Palestinian collective memory and identities are reproduced through key symbolic referents, namely: the village land, territory, nation and the “transnational”. For the purpose of creating a Palestinian state, the people and officials have instrumentalized these notions; and this underscores the process of reinterpretation under way. Although, given, in particular, the conflict with Israel, these concepts are still fundamental for most Palestinians, their meanings and interrelations are changing as a function of the new lines of demarcation shaping the society around ever deeper cleavages.
