National Academies Report Cites Flaws in VA’s Burn Pit Registry

  • Collectively, burn sites at large US military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan incinerated 60 000 to 85 000 pounds of waste—including plastics, chemicals, petroleum, and human refuse—daily during the 2000s. The practice was banned due to health concerns in 2009.

    In a new report, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that a congressionally mandated volunteer registry for military personnel exposed to toxic airborne chemicals and fumes from these open-air burn pits “has limited value for improving individual patient care.”
