The Second World War gave substance to the natural link which traditionally existed between Britain and its former colony, a tie that was reinforced by their common battle against Germany. It was Churchill who added a mythical dimension to this link by calling it a « special relationship ». Seen by the UK as a vital component of its status as a major power, this relationship produced tangible results mainly in the field of defence. However, it did not enable British leaders to exert more than an indirect influence on US foreign policy.

S’il existait naturellement un rapport privilégié entre le Royaume-Uni et son ancienne colonie avant même la Seconde Guerre mondiale, c’est la lutte menée en commun contre l’Allemagne nazie qui l’a concrétisé. Churchill lui a donné sa dimension mythique en lui substituant le concept de « relation spéciale ». Revendiquée par le Royaume-Uni comme élément de son statut international, cette relation, qui s’est essentiellement manifestée dans le domaine de la défense, n’a toutefois guère permis aux dirigeants britanniques d’infléchir la politique étrangère américaine autrement que de façon indirecte.
