    Freedom of health treatment, also protected by Article 32 of the Italian Cosntitution, encompasses the right to decide where to receive medicale care; whence, the opportunity for the individuals to take advantage of the diversity of national rules and to obtain abroad what is precluded at home. This paper highlights how wthically controversial tratments - such as medically assisted procreation, sex reassignment therapies and assisted suicide - affect the individual's legal nature as much a his/her psychophysical nature, thus impacting on his/her legal status within the family and the society. In other words, when medical treatments abroad are involved, we witness a transition from body disposition to personal/family status disposition which entails legal repercussions (on both the private and public slides, e.g. effects on the status civitatis). It must be acknowledged that, in this as in other areas that influence an individual's personal status, competition between systems ultimately leads to the overpowering of the most conservative ones, such as the Italian. A global context which favors the recognition of status that havebeen acquired abroad makes less firm the internal legal system's fundamental values.
