    The purpose of this article is to outline the use of lethal force by the military police in the State of São Paulo, to discuss how it is used and to elaborate recommendations for it to be legal, legitimate and professional. In this sense, the first chapter presents the theoretical and normative discussion about the use of force by the police. The second analyzes the behavior of police lethality in the city of São Paulo over the last few years seeking to highlight institutional actions that may have influenced this phenomenon by public authorities. The third chapter analyzes the profile of police lethality from the study of Police Occurrence reports of resistance followed by death in the Capital of São Paulo in 2012. Finally, the last chapter offers some recommendations to strengthen control over police activity and improve the use of lethal force, from the perspective of legality, legitimacy and professionalism on the part of the police.

    O presente artigo tem o objetivo de traçar um panorama sobre o uso da força letal pela polícia militar paulista em serviço, problematizando como se dá esse uso e oferecendo recomendações para que ele seja legal, legítimo e profissional. Para tanto, o primeiro capítulo apresenta a discussão teórica e normativa sobre o uso da força pela polícia. O segundo analisa o comportamento da letalidade policial na capital ao longo dos últimos anos, buscando destacar ações institucionais que possam ter influenciado esse fenômeno por parte das autoridades públicas. O terceiro capítulo analisa o perfil da letalidade policial a partir do estudo dos boletins de ocorrência de resistências seguida de morte na Capital de São Paulo em 2012. Por fim, o último capítulo oferece algumas recomendações para fortalecer o controle sobre a atividade policial e aprimorar o uso da força letal, na perspectiva da legalidade, legitimidade e profissionalismo por parte da polícia.
