    In the late Middle Ages, the Chiana river valley, a fertile land connected to Rome in the Etruscan and Roman era, became unhealthy due to stagnant water. In order to provide an accurate account of the situation, the following pages focus on a limited part of the river during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries with some consideration of sub sequent centuries in order to evaluate how the environment affected towns and also small centres at the beginning of the Modern Age

    La valle del fiume Chiana, terra fertile e dotata di un collegamento fluviale su Roma in epoca etrusca e romana, nel tardo medioevo diviene sinonimo di terre malsane, con fenomeni di stagnazione delle acque. Per portare un contributo ad una più puntuale conoscenza di tale stato, le pagine seguenti si concentrano su un tratto circoscritto del fiume e su una fase limitata, i secoli XII-XIII, con alcuni sondaggi anche per i successivi, per valutare le relazioni tra ambiente e uomini, sia delle città sia dei centri minori, giungendo alle soglie dell’età moderna
