This paper deals with multicultural music education. Music educators from different countries have studied this issue in the last decades and, more recently, Spanish teachers have demonstrated a growing interest in multicultural, pedagogical concerns. A short review of different approaches shows that, although these scholars rely on the social and cultural realities of the countries being studied, their efforts seem to gravitate to the answering of similar questions, such as: what are the principles that support a multicultural perspective in music education?, and, how can we find a balance between the musical traditions of Western civilization and the varieties of music of other cultural groups? Underscoring their concerns is the general acknowledgement that music teachers must broaden the curriculum to accommodate and represent all types of music.
