    Formentera es una pequeña isla de 82,5 Km2 de superficie, muy dependiente del turismo y que posee bastantes similitudes con Ibiza. Pero las características de Formentera (aislamiento, tamaño, clima, etc.) han hecho que existan diferencias con Ibiza y el resto de Baleares: el turismo se desarrolló más tardíamente, predominan los pequeños establecimientos, hay una fuerte dependencia de un solo país emisor y la imagen está sustentada en el entorno natural. Este trabajo busca describir las peculiaridades y diferencias que caracterizan al turismo de Formentera. Aunque aprovechó el impacto mediático de los hippies, al igual que Ibiza, los elementos que ha priorizado de su herencia hippie no son los mismos: Formentera se ha centrado en las playas, los paisajes y el mar; Ibiza ha priorizado las discotecas, las fiestas y la vida nocturna. Esta diferenciación ha permitido que Formentera sea vista como un producto distinto a Ibiza pero a la vez complementario, o como una Ibiza de antaño. Es una oferta complementaria de “día y noche”, con las playas de Formentera durante el día y las fiestas de Ibiza durante la noche. Esta complementariedad puede verse en el migrar diario de muchos yates entre ambas islas. De cara al futuro, los retos que debe afrontar la isla son la dependencia del mercado italiano, la estacionalidad y la masificación veraniega.

    Formentera is a small island of 82.5 Km2 of surface, very dependent on tourism and has many similarities with Ibiza. But the characteristics of Formentera (insulation, size, climate, etc.) have done that there are differences with Ibiza and the rest of Balearic Islands: tourism developed later on, dominated by small establishments, there is a strong dependence on a single issuing country and the image is supported by the natural environment. This paper aims to describe the peculiarities and differences that characterize the tourism of Formentera. Although it took the media impact of the hippies, like Ibiza, the elements that has prioritized its hippie heritage are not the same: Formentera has focused on the beaches, the landscapes and the sea; Ibiza has prioritized the nightclubs, parties and nightlife. This differentiation has allowed that Formentera is seen as a different product to Ibiza but at the same time complementary, or as an Ibiza of yesteryear. It is a complementary supply of "day and night", with the beaches of Formentera during the day and the parties of Ibiza overnight. This complementarity can be seen in the daily migration of many yachts between both islands. Looking ahead, the challenges facing the island are the dependence on the Italian market, the seasonality and the summer overcrowding.
