Resumen de Shale gas realisation in the UK edges closer

Mike O´Driscoll

  • Presentations also focused on comparing the UK with the US's shale gas sector - at this stage largely incomparable owing to major differences in geology, onshore infrastructure and as a common denominator across the board, ''a horrible lack of data''.

[Al Fraser] had already spotlighted the UK's most likely targets: shale gas from the Carboniferous Bowland Basin, Edale Gulf, and Gainsborough Trough in north England - ''The best layer cake in the region (...) if it doesn't happen here, it won't happen anywhere [in the UK],'' he exclaimed; and shale oil from the Oxford and Kimmeridge clays of the Jurassic basin of southern England.

[Clarke] also projected that a ''land grab'' might be imminent this year as interest in claiming stakes in UK shale plays was growing rapidly. [Ed Hough], BGS, earlier showed where in the UK a range of such claims had already been staked by the likes of Cuadrilla, Dart, Total, IGas, Eden Energy, and Celtique Energie.
