    An analysis of the mechanism of causal attribution in the candidates' discourse reveals a highly rigid discursive system which can be formalized. The political actor sets himself up as the agent of the most diverse social phenomena. There is a consensus on that between the incumbent and his challengers, even if the pre-1988 context of " cohabitation " enlarges the field of possible attributions. Such an explanatory structure owes its stability to the operation of political discourse, impregnated with psychologism and always ready to reduce causality to co-variation. It also answers the expectations of both candidates and voters.

    En analysant le mécanisme des attributions causales dans le discours des candidats, on met en évidence un système discursif extrêmement rigide qu'il est possible de formaliser. L'acteur politique s'érige en agent producteur des phénomènes sociaux les plus divers. Il y a sur ce point consensus entre le sortant et ses challengers, même si le contexte de « cohabitation » d'avant 1988 élargit le champ des attributions possibles. Une telle structure explicative doit sa stabilité au mode de fonctionnement de la parole politique, imprégnée de psychologisme et toujours prompte à réduire la causalité à la co-variance. Elle répond également aux attentes des candidats et des électeurs.
