Toledo contó a lo largo del siglo XVI con una treintena de violeros. A mediados de esa centuria desarrollaban su actividad al menos una docena de ellos. El joven vallisoletano Mateo Arratia llega a la ciudad atraído por la creciente demanda de la capital y trabaja en el taller de Portillo. El que llegara a ser uno de los violeros más prolíficos del siglo XVI, es acusado en su juventud de herejía y procesado por la inquisición. El documento recoge interesantísimas informaciones sobre diferentes aspectos de la vida de este violero, su personalidad, entorno, los ambientes que rodeaban a los talleres y abundantes alusiones a los demás violeros toledanos, así como noticias de otros que no conocíamos. El documento informa sobre el elevado status social de algunos violeros y aporta interesantes pistas para la historia de las mentalidades

During the 16th century, the city o f Toledo (Spain) hosted approximately thirty luthiers. By the mid-century, at least a dozen of them developed their activity. The young Mateo Arratia, born in Valladolid, arrives in the city attracted by the increasing demand of the capital and he works at the workshop of Portillo. This man, who will be later known as one of the most prolific luthiers of the 16th century, was accused of heresy and prosecuted by the Inquisition when he was still young. The document contains very interesting information regarding the different aspects of this luthier’s life, his personality, his context and the environments surrounding the workshops and the abundant references to the rest of the luthiers in Toledo, even the news coming from others that were still unknown. The document reports on the high social status of some luthiers and it contributes with very interesting pieces of information for the history of the mentalities.
