The discovery of the first tabella defbaonis in Spain, in the colony of Astigi (Ecija), proves that circus factions also existed in Baetica; this is not a particularly surprising finding. This lead tablet also provides interesting information on the question of alliances between factions and on the roles played by owners and horse breeders. The article also reviews the letters of Symmachus sent to Spanish correspondents shortly before 400 AD, on the occasion of games organized to celebrate his son holding a magistracy {praetor urbanus). It also explores the weakening of the factions in that period.
