This article, after an introduction on the importance of the political prestige of victory in ancient and modem horse racing, examines the recently published Milan papyrus [P. Mil. Vogl. VIII309], which contains an entire section devoted to epigrams for hippie victories. The information from these epigrams nicely supplements the comprehensive list of Olympic winners compiled by Luigi Moretti. In one case - epigram 77 celebrating a multiple winner in chariot racing, of whose name the papyrus retains only the first two letters - it is a matter of a literary celebration of one of the great winners of the past, the Spartan Evagoras whose chariot won three victories at Olympia.
