    • This article investigates the nature of the relationship between the so-called professional associations in the village of Tebtunis, in the Fayum, and the Roman government in the first century AD. It aims to assess how far the state exercised any control over these associations during the early stages of the Roman domination in Egypt. The article includes a socio-economic analysis of the Tebtunis associations and an Appendix on the meaning of the ??af???a which were registered at the local record-office.
