Last December, the Council of the Spanish Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos approved the setting up of a Commission on the status of Women in Civil Engineering, with the purpose of strengthening the role represented by women in the institution. This article provides a brief historical overview, putting in context the current situation of registered female civil engineers working both in Spain and abroad. The publication of these figures forms just one of the many initiatives to be undertaken to provide greater awareness of our work, as well as to encourage younger women to join our profession and lend our experience to other countries in more precarious situations.
