  • Resumen
    • Several times a year, JAMA publishes a theme issue, an entire issue devoted to one topic. The seed for today’s theme issues was planted in 1978 when deputy editor M. Therese Southgate, MD, created the Contempo issue.1 The first Contempo was a collection of 20 articles written by editorial board members about advances in their specialties. It was so successful that it went on to be published annually for many years, expanding to cover as many as 40 essays and including additional experts as guest authors.
