La protection religieuse de l'entrée du château à l'époque romane en Haut-Poitou

    In the castle, the chapel is a very important building. It is erected either in an independent position, in the courtyard, or near the entrance of the castle. In Haut-Poitou, two places show the will of puting the chapel near the door : Angles-sur-1'Anglin where there are two examples (Saint-Pierre chapel, XIth century ; Sainte-Marie chapel, end of the XIIth century) and Morthemer (XIth century) where the access to the castle was put under Notre-Dame church. Some comparisons show that there is the same thing in others examples and induce to think that, at the romanesque time, the chapel was quite often erected near or over the access, and this to give a religious protection to the entrance of the castle.

    La chapelle castrale est un bâtiment très important. Elle est construite soit en position indépendante, dans la cour, soit près de l'entrée du château. En Haut-Poitou, deux sites mettent en valeur la volonté de placer la chapelle près de l'entrée : Angles-sur-1'Anglin où il y a deux exemples (chapelle Saint-Pierre, XIe s. ; chapelle Sainte-Marie, fin XIIe s.) et Morthemer (XIe s.) où l'accès au château se faisait sous l'église Notre-Dame. Des comparaisons montrent que le phénomène se rencontre ailleurs et amènent à penser qu'à l'époque romane la chapelle a été assez souvent placée près ou au-dessus de l'accès, et ce afin d'assurer la protection religieuse de l'entrée du château.
