  Little Boys in Mother's Wardrobe. ¿Cómo entender la aceptación voluntaria, e incluso la búsqueda activa, de una identidad tan desdeñada como la de un travestí homosexual en un país tan machista como Mexico ? Este articulo se basa en un trabajo de investigación con un grupo de travestís homosexuales en un barrio popular de Ciudad de México. En él se analiza la trayectoria de varones jóvenes, orientada tanto hacia una identidad y una práctica homosexuales como hacia la adopción de una apariencia femenina, dos fenómenos intrínsecamente relacionados en este caso. Para comprender esta evolución hay que establecer la diferencia entre : 1) factores biológicos y psicológicos, 2) experiencias sexuales precoces, 3) designación social (labeling) y 4) aprendizaje. El autor utiliza este caso particular para comentar las distintas teorías sobre el origen de la orientación sexual. En su gran mayoría, los travestís del grupo estudiado están convencidos de que nacieron siendo homosexuales y afeminados. Pueden tener muchos motivos para querer explicarse a si mismos en términos esencialistas ; no obstante, resulta imposible entender sus trayectorias personales si únicamente se toman en consideración factores externos, sociales - sobre todo cuando se sabe que la presión social que sobre ellos se ejerce tiende a obtener el resultado inverso, es decir, hacerlos volver a la normalidad. En cambio, resulta imposible explicar el hecho de que la bisexualidad masculina esté tan generalizada en México si se invocan factores internos ; en este caso es de capital importancia referirse a la categorización y la designación social.

  Little Boys in Mother's Wardrobe. Wie ließe sich die freiwillige Annahme oder gar aktive Bemühung um eine sosehr mißachtete Identität, wie diejenige eines homosexuellen Transvestiten in einem derart machistischen Land wie Mexiko erklären? Aufbauend auf einer Untersuchung in einer Gruppe homosexueller Transvestiten eines populären Viertels Mexikos analysiert der Artikel die Entwicklung männlicher Heranwachsender zu homosexueller Identität und Praxis, wie außerdem zu einem weiblichen äußeren, zwei Phänomene, die im zur Frage stehenden Fall eng miteinander in Verbindung stehen. Um diesen Werdegang zu verstehen, muß unbedingt zwischen 1) biologischen und psychologischen Faktoren, 2) frühzeitigen sexuellen Erfahrungen, 3) sozialer Etikettierung (labeling) und 4) Rolleneinübung unterschieden werden. Bei dieser Gelegenheit geht der Autor außerdem kommentierend auf verschiedene Theorien über den Ursprung sexueller Orientierung ein. In ihrer großen Mehrheit sind diese Transvestiten davon überzeugt, daß sie schon homosexuell und feminisiert geboren worden sind. Viele Gründe mögen dafür sprechen, sich in diesen essentialistischen Begriffen interpretieren zu wollen, indes scheint unmöglich zu sein, ihren Entwicklungsgang ausschließlich von externen, sozialen Faktoren her zu verstehen, besonders wenn man den auf sie ausgeübten sozialen Druck kennt, um das gegenteilige Ergebnis zu erzielen und sie wieder in die Normalität einzugliedern. Stattdessen erscheint unmöglich, durch interne Faktoren den Tatbestand zu erklären, daß die männliche Bisexualität derart verbreitet in Mexiko ist, Kategorisierung und soziale Etikettierung scheinen in diesem Fall ausschlaggebend zu sein.

Comment comprendre l'acceptation volontaire, voire la recherche active, d'une identité aussi dédaignée que celle d'un travesti homosexuel dans un pays aussi machiste que le Mexique ? Basé sur une enquête auprès d'un groupe de travestis homosexuels dans un quartier populaire de Mexico, cet article analyse le cheminement de jeunes garçons vers une identité et une pratique homosexuelles, ainsi que vers une apparence féminine - deux phénomènes qui dans ce cas sont intrinsèquement liés. Pour comprendre cette évolution il faut chercher à faire le partage entre 1) facteurs biologiques ou psychologiques, 2) expériences sexuelles précoces, 3) désignation sociale (labeling) et 4) apprentissage. L'auteur se sert de ce cas particulier pour commenter les différentes théories sur l'origine de l'orientation sexuelle. Ces travestis sont pour la grande majorité persuadés qu'ils sont nés homosexuels et efféminés. Ils peuvent avoir beaucoup de raisons pour vouloir s'interpréter dans ces termes essentialistes, mais il reste qu'il semble impossible de comprendre leurs trajectoires en prenant compte uniquement des facteurs externes, sociaux - surtout quand on connaît la pression sociale exercée sur eux pour obtenir le résultat inverse, pour les faire rentrer dans la normalité. Par contre, il semble impossible d'expliquer par des facteurs internes le fait que la bisexualité masculine soit si répandue au Mexique, dans ce cas la catégorisation et la désignation sociales semblent décisives.

  Little Boys in Mother's Wardrobe. How to understand the voluntary acceptation, and even the active pursuit, of so despised an identity as that of homosexual transvestite in such a macho country as Mexico. Based on a survey of a group of homosexual transvestites in one of Mexico City's popular quarters, the present article analyses the way some young boys come to identify themselves as practicing homosexuals and to adopt a female appearance - two phenomena which in this case are intrinsically linked. In order to understand this evolution, responsibility needs to be meeted out among 1) biological or psychological factors, 2) early sexual experiences, 3) social labeling and 4) learning. The author uses this particular case to review the different theories on the origin of sexual orientation. The vast majority of transvestites are persuaded they are born homosexual and effeminate. They may have many reasons for wanting to interpret themselves in these basic terms, but the fact remains that it seems impossible to understand their trajectories from external, social factors alone - especially considering the social pressure put on them to obtain the opposite result, to bring them back to normalcy.On the other hand, it seems impossible to explain the extent of male bisexuality in Mexico by internal factors ; in the present case, social cataloging and labeling seem to be decisive.
