Ajax is, in Sophocles’ tragedy as in the literary tradition, a character that is in conflict with the gods and men. Sophocles takes other characters in the epic tradition — Hector and Odisseus— to show the aspects in which Ajax is problematic and eventually to rehabilitate him.
