Resumen de Employee Benefits in the Hospitality Industry in the US: Inhospitable for Employees?

Swarnankur Chatterjee, Mitzi Lauderdale, John Gilliam

  • This paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to examine the likelihood of receiving health insurance coverage and retirement benefits among employees working in the hospitality sector. The results show that, although hospitality sector employees are less likely to receive health insurance coverage and retirement benefits from their employers when compared with respondents employed in other sectors, the likelihood of receiving employee benefits increases with job tenure, income and educational attainment. A discussion on the possible strategic initiatives for increasing employee benefits in this sector is included for industry leaders, policy makers, economists.
