En este trabajo se describe la historia del chicle o goma de mascar obtenido a partir del látex de Euphorbia balsamifera. Esta planta tiene una amplia distribución por el noroeste de África y sur de Arabia, estando presente también en las Islas Canarias. En Gran Canaria y Tenerife se recolectó su látex como materia prima para la elaboración de chicle con carácter industrial. Se registraron varias marcas comerciales que controlaron el mercado del chicle en España en el periodo entre 1946 y bien iniciada la década de 1950. Los chicles Tabay, marca registrada por el canario Augusto Hernández Rodríguez, fueron los chicles de tabaiba dulce más conocidos durante este período

In this paper will be described the history of chewing gum obtained from the latex of Euphorbia balsamifera. This plant has a wide distribution in northwest Africa and southern Arabia, being present also in the Canary Islands. In Gran Canaria and Tenerife its latex was collected as raw material for the manufacture of chewing gum industrial character. Several brands, which controlled the chewing gum market in Spain between 1946 and well started the 1950s, were recorded.
The Tabay chewing gum, recorded by the canary Augusto Rodríguez Hernández, were the most popular chewing gum obtained from sweet tabaiba gum during this period
