  • Academic libraries have tightened their relationship with the regional environment. They close new partnership with public libraries and local governments, they open their services to citizenship. A strong interest for rare collections is flourishing. As a consequence of this, academic libraries close new collaborations with museums and archives. Furthermore, the digital infrastructure of the academic libraries is offering a powerful support for digital library projects involving different territorial partners. By following these new social trends, academic libraries encounter the idea of the third mission of the university; they open to the society and prepare themselves to perform a social role.
