    Les spécificités de l’histoire provinciale marquent profondément l’étude des cités du pouvoir en Narbonnaise. A partir de la fin de l’époque césarienne, les effets du droit latin et le développement du phénomène colonial contribuent à hiérarchiser les centres urbains. Un phénomène original est l’organisation ins­titutionnelle de grandes cités, en rapport avec la géographie humaine héritée de l’époque proto-historique. Les points forts du réseau urbain constitué à l’époque augustéenne s’af­firment sur la longue durée.

    The specificities of provincial history have a deep impact on the study of cities of power in Gallia Narbonensis. From the end of the caesarean age, the effects of Latin law and the development of the colonial phenomenon both contributed to a prioritization of urban centres. In relation to the human geography inherited from the proto-historic period, the institutional organization of great cities is an original phenomenon. The strengths of the urban network at the Augustan age then be­came established over a long period.
