    La chute du Parti libéral démocrate peut être expliquée par les modifications de la conjoncture internationale sur le plan politique et économique, par ses propres dysfonc­tionnements internes ou par la paralysie du processus de décision au sein d'un catch-ail party démesurément grossi. L'analyse des élections japonaises depuis 1980 ne révèle pas une mobilisation significative contre le PLD en juillet 1993. Ce constat conduit à privi­légier l'explication centrée sur ses dysfonctionnements. Les mécanismes sophistiqués pour la gestion de ses rivalités internes n'ont pas fonctionné sous l'effet des contraintes trop rigides qu'ils imposaient aux ambitions. L'anarchie croissante dans le financement du parti et son renchérissement ont atteint l'insupportable pour les bailleurs de fonds, pour l'opinion et même pour de nombreux élus, et entraîné des scissions qui l'ont privé de sa majorité. Il est sûr aussi qu'un parti dominant monolithique n'exprimait plus efficacement une demande sociale qui se diversifiait sous l'effet de la modernisation et de l'internatio­nalisation. La recomposition en cours devrait donner naissance à terme à trois formations plus représentatives de cette diversité.

    The Japanese legislative elections (18 july 1993). The fall of the liberal democratic party and the recomposition of the political system The fall of the Liberal Democratie Party can be explained by the political and economie modifications of the international conjuncture, by its own internai dysfunctioning or by the paralysis of the decision-making process within an outsized catchall party. The analysis of Japanese elections since 1980 does not reveal a significant mobilization against the LDP in July 1993, which leads to granting more credence to the explanation centered on its dysfunctioning. The sophisticated mechanisms for managing the LDP's internai rivalries broke down because of the rigid constraints which they imposed on ambitions. The growing anarchy of party finance and its increasing costs became unbearable to the contributors, to public opinion and even to many elected officials. They brought about splits which deprived it of its majority. It is also clear that as a monolithic dominant party, the LDP was no longer effectively expressing social demands increasingly diversified under the impact of modernization and internationalisation. The recomposition in progress is likely to eventually give birth to three groups more representative of this diversity.
