    La colección de arte rupestre que hoy se conserva en el Archivo del Museo Nacionalde Ciencias Naturales (AMNCN) está constituida por varios miles de ejemplares de distinta naturaleza. Es una amplia y magnífica muestra de calcos y láminas que refleja la actividad desarrollada por la Comisión de Investigaciones Paleontológicas y Prehistóricas (CIPP) hasta 1936, con algunas adiciones posteriores. La creación de la CIPP en 1912 constituye el inicio de la mejor colección de copias de arte rupestre español depositada en un Museo, y con ella comienza el periodo más fructífero de descubrimientos de arte rupestre de la Península Ibérica, y su reproducción sistemática a través de copias directas en papel. Las figuras de Santiago Ramón y Cajal y de Ignacio Bolívar fueron claves para la formalización de la propuesta de creación de la CIPP realizada por Eduardo Hernández-Pacheco, cuya presidencia ostentaría el Marqués de Cerralbo. En las siguientes líneas se describe la composición de la colección de Arte Rupestre del AMNCN y sus orígenes.

    The collection of rock art that today it is preserved in the archive of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (AMNCN) is formed by several thousands of copies of a different nature. It is a wide and magnificent display of tracings and drawings that reflects the activity of the Comisión de Investigaciones Paleontológicas y Prehistóricas (CIPP) until 1936, with some later additions. The creation of the CIPP in 1912 was the origin of the best collection of copies of Spanish rock art kept in a museum. It is also the beginning of the most fruitful period of discoveries of rock art sites in the Iberian Peninsula, and of the systematic recording through direct copies on paper. The figures of Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Ignacio Bolívar were the keys to the formalization of the proposal to create the CIPP made by Eduardo Hernandez-Pacheco, whose chair were in charge of the Marquis of Cerralbo. In the following lines the origins and composition of the holdings of AMNCN are described.
