This article presents the results of restorations executed on 17th and 18th century wooden sculptures kept both in the churches and confraternities in the Province of Asti (Piedmont). They were gathered together for the exhibition "Il Teatro del Sacro", opened in Asti in April 2009. In this essay, together with the primary role both of cataloguing and archival investigation, the restoration can be considered as an important source both of information and knowledge about the work execution. Here two particular cases are analyzed in more detail: in the first, a proper restoration project is documented; in the second, the undocumented history of a wooden sculpture has led to its reconstruction by restoration.
